ETC 2.0 is the world's first I2V collaboration system that offers driving support services enabled by high-throughput bidirectional communication through ITS Spots (antennas) installed alongside the highways.
The system may bring about reduction of traffic volume in specific locations or time periods prevention of accidents and mitigation of the deterioration of roadway structures.
As a result, limited resource of road networks can be used more cleverly, and efficiently in longer period of time.
ETC 2.0 provides a wide variety of information transmitted from the ITS Spots.
Safe driving support
How useful it would be to get timely information while driving about traffic conditions at such points of as lane merging or branches in the front!
The system presents visual and audible alerts when there is a falling object found or a hazardous point of lane merging ahead as well as invisible traffic congestion being occurred around the corner, etc. These precautions will eliminate sudden surprises while driving.
Safe driving support
How useful it would be to get timely information about lane mergers or exits of highway while driving!

The system delivers visual and audible alerts on the navigation display about such hazards ahead as falling objects, lane mergers or invisible congestion around the corner, etc.
These precautions will eliminate sudden surprises while driving.

Information on halted cars
The system provides audible and visual information about invisible traffic congestion or obstacles around the corner etc.
Knowing the state of obstacles or congestion that may lie ahead enables safer driving.

Visual information
The system provides still images for displaying such information as occurrence of traffic congestion in tunnels as well as a bad weather event as fog or snow on the roadway in the front. Knowing such roadway conditions ahead enables safer driving.
Note: Car navigation device equipped with ETC 2.0 is required.
Congestion avoidance support
Avoid congestion in Tokyo metropolitan area by knowing traffic conditions in Kanagawa, Tokyo and Saitama when driving home from Hakone to Saitama!
Users can select the optimum route when entering into the metropolitan area from suburbs of Tokyo because ITS Spots provide traffic information for a maximum road length of 1000 km and the user can find out necessary time of each route by using a car navigation device equipped with ETC 2.0.
Congestion avoidance support
Avoid congestion in Tokyo metropolitan area by knowing traffic conditions in Kanagawa, Tokyo and Saitama when driving home from Hakone to Saitama!

Because previous devices could not receive traffic information on adjacent prefectures it was difficult to select the best route considering these traffic conditions on adjacent areas.
Since ETC 2.0 provides traffic information covering a maximum of 1000 km of roads, the ETC 2.0 compatible car navigation device can receive data on necessary time of the whole routes in the metropolitan area when driving into the metropolitan area from the suburbs of Tokyo, and thus can select and display the optimal route..

Wide area traffic information can be transmitted in real time as well as still images of traffic congestion in the front.
Note: Car navigation device equipped with ETC 2.0 is required.
Support under Disaster
What do you do if there is an earthquake occurred while you're driving on the highway?
The system provides information on assistance when disasters occur. The information includes ongoing situation of disasters and their impacts. Even though disasters are unpredictable, such information helps drivers behave calmly under disastrous situation.
Support under Disaster
What do you do if there is an earthquake occurred while you're driving on the highway?

Even if sudden disasters occur, you can behave calmly.
The system provides aid information in addition to the ongoing disaster situation when disasters occur.
Note: Car navigation device equipped with ETC 2.0 is required.
Bidirectional communications through ITS Spots will enable these services (Planned).
- Preferential measures for detouring drivers to avoid traffic congestion, etc.
- Support for commercial vehicle operation management

*To apply for these services, the owners who are currently using on-board DSRC- equipment must re-setup the device before the use of ETC 2.0. These services cannot be applied with conventional on-board ETC equipment.
Current ETC lanes have gate bars, as well as a maximum passing speed limit of 20 km/h. New toll booths and lanes are planned to be constructed along with the timing of implementation of seamless toll rate system.
*The new toll booths and lanes will be introduced in 2016.

From the highway into the downtown-spreading usage of ETC. In addition to the toll payment, such multipurpose use of ETC is being promoted as parking fee payment in downtown area or vehicle entering/leaving management. There are a lot of possibilities to develop new future services.
More services in private sectors
Many private services will become available with ETC 2.0. These services will be more convenient and easier to use such as wireless transactions in drive-through shops and gas stations.
Paying for parking fees

Small change no longer needed.
Can be used in residential parking

Vehicle entering/leaving management
Simplified car ferry services

No more waiting line by simplified vehicle check in boarding procedures of ferryboat!
Future service development
Payment of fees
No need for small change. Commercial information about shops around will also be transmittable.

Enhanced customer management
Particular services for patrons can be prepared by detecting approaching customer in advance.
