To Use ETC 2.0 Services

An ETC 2.0 compatible in-vehicle device (ETC 2.0 in-vehicle device, speech-type ETC 2.0 in-vehicle device with GPS system, or DSRC in-vehicle device) is required.
However, in order to use the new services, an in-vehicle device setup for ETC 2.0 after July 1, 2015 is required.

Also, in order to use graphics and photo data that use ETC 2.0 high-speed large-capacity communication, a car navigation or smartphone and connective ETC 2.0 in-vehicle device are required.

Note: Compatible smartphones will vary depending on the ETC 2.0 in-vehicle device. For details please refer to ETC in-vehicle device manufacturer websites.

For those using an ETC in-vehicle device

The current in-vehicle device can only be used to pay expressway toll fee for ETC.

  • ETC in-vehicle device is only capable of expressway toll payment service using the ETC system.
  • In order to use ETC 2.0 service, user will be required to replace the current ETC in-vehicle device to ETC 2.0 compatible in-vehicle device (e.g. ETC 2.0 in-vehicle device, speech-type ETC 2.0 in-vehicle device with GPS system, or DSRC in-vehicle device) and setup for ETC 2.0.

For those using a DSRC in-vehicle device

Note: In-vehicle device installed/setup prior to June 2015

This device can be used

  • Information providing services such as traffic congestion information, safe driving support, and support information during disaster, will be available for use.
  • Current DSRC in-vehicle device must be reconfigured for ETC 2.0 when using the new services that are made available from April 2016.
  • If you have reconfigured a DSRC in-vehicle device to ETC 2.0 after July 1, 2015 there is no need for reconfiguration as all DSRC devices have been switched to ETC 2.0 setup on July 1, 2015.
  • A vehicle installed with in-vehicle device and its driver has participated as a monitor for “Travel route confirmation social experiment” (held between Nov. 1, 2013 and Feb. 25, 2014) requires no additional setup to use the new services.

Purchasing and installing the on-board equipment

ETC 2.0 on-board equipment can be purchased and installed at car dealers, car accessory outlets and car repair workshops, etc. Installation of the device requires specialized knowledge and skills. Be sure that the device is so installed as in accordance with the instruction manual by the manufacturer of the device. If an old ETC on-board equipment has been installed, it must be removed.*

*If a conventional ETC and an ETC 2.0 devices are both installed at the same time in a vehicle, it may produce malfunctions of the devices.

Setup of on-board equipment

When setting up the ETC2.0 on-board equipment, the both functions of ETC and DSRC must be set up at the same time. This operation cannot be done separately.
Make sure that the setup operation must be done by a setup shop to set up data regarding your vehicle information in the on-board equipment. ETC2.0 shops that can set up ETC 2.0 on-board equipment display a "ETC2.0 shop" sticker.

Type of on-board equipment

ETC 2.0 in-vehicle devices that interlock with car navigation

Information received with ETC 2.0 on-board equipment can be replayed/displayed as voice or images on a connected car navigation device. Interlocked car navigation device can receive wide range of information services such as roadway information on highways and internet connections at rest areas of highways or road stations like Michi-no-eki.
Also, wireless payment services by using IC credit card are planned for the future.

Speech-type ETC 2.0 in-vehicle device with GPS system

This type of device does not have image display like a car navigation device , but convey information with voice.
Acoustic type ETC 2.0 on-board equipment that will enable wireless payment by IC credit card is also planned for the future.

Smartphone-linked ETC 2.0 on-board equipment

There are certain differences in receivable ITS Spot services between the device types such as ETC 2.0 on-board equipment linked with car navigation device and acoustic type device.

There are also differences in contents of receivable services by manufacturers or types of device even if it was the ETC 2.0 on-board equipment with car navigation device of the same name.

Please ask the manufacturer of devices for details.
